What is isoboard?
It is a type of polystyrene foam ceiling insulation that has been made into foam panels. Isoboard is an effective thermal insulation that is often used instead of the usual rhino ceiling boards because it has much better thermal properties. polystyrene is often used in suspended ceilings in offices or verandas.
How long does isoboard last?
Well it’s made from polystyrene foam and typically has an indefinite lifespan. You will not need to replace the isoboard due to ageing. If a polystyrene panel is accidentally broken then a replacement panel can be bought.
How does isoboard work?
It is made up of small gas-filled cells, similar to a honeycomb. Making isoboard in this way gives it strength and makes it an excellent insulation. The gas that is trapped within the honeycomb structure of isoboard has very low thermal conductivity and prevents heat from transferring through the product.
What thickness does isoboard come in?
Thickness Width R-Value
25 mm 600 0.83
30 mm 600 1.00
40 mm 600 1.33
50 mm 600 1.66
60 mm 600 2.00
70 mm 600 2.33
80 mm 600 2.66
Isoboard is a good polystyrene ceiling insulation when a decent thickness is applied. The thicker the board the better insulating affect and higher R-value you will achieve. It has great thermal properties and even helps with acoustic properties to some degree.
What is the difference in temperature between isoboard thickness’s?
Temperature differences may vary depending on many factors, but you can normally expect one or two degree reduction in temperature as you go up in thickness with isoboard polystyrene ceiling insulation. Ideally you want to choose a thicker board rather than the thinner board for maximum thermal and heat control.
Isoboard and down lights
Be careful when installing down lights in isoboard ceilings. The polystyrene foam will shrink and shrivel from the excessive heat of the down lights. There are a few ways to combat this problem. The use of a product called ALU lamp, which has a thicker aluminium coating surrounding the down light will reflect heat and light forward reducing the heat directly hitting the isoboard. Another way to combat the problem is by having energy efficient LCD down lights installed. These down lights don’t produce heat so there will be no problem with them being directly installed onto the isoboard.
Can you clean isoboard if it gets dirty?
You may find that after a few years or even if people need to work in your roof, that the isoboard will get dirty, either with dust or fingerprints from contractors that don’t clean up after themselves. If this does happen, simply take a damp cloth and some fabric softener to wipe the board. The messy finger prints and dust are usually removed with ease using this method.
